TRON Lightcycle Race Diorama |
By Marco Scheloske |
22 years ago Diseny released the first movie featuring the extensive use of CGI: TRON. The toys never made it to Germany, and models didn`t exist. BUT with the help of the online community I could finally build what I wished to do for more then two decades - a diorama of my favourite scene, the lightcycle sequence. I really owe Vince Hoffmann a debt of gratitude for the friendly donation of some of his small resin lightcycles! Without those this model wouldn't exist. I made some screenshots from the DVD to get references for the painting of the three cycles. That was a bit tricky here and there because they are cast in one piece, but with a bit of patience it went well. The pattern for my dio was the scene in which Ram and Tron take the last remaining system-warrior between them to finally make their run through the wall-breach of the arena. So I painted the lightcycles red, yellow-orange and blue with very bright colors by Citadel / Games workshop. The lighwalls are made in FreeHand on a Macintosh, printed on heavy cardboard (250 g/sqm). The white edges of the papersheets are tinted with water color pens. The grid is also made in FreeHand. The walls of the display are taken from a terrific papermodel of a lightcycle - why invent the wheel twice? This free papermodel is available here. To stabilize the model I glued a 3mm polyfoam-sheet underneath the grid and also to the bottom of the display. Now the only thing left to do was to place the painted lightcycles and the cutted and trimmed walls onto the base. The whole model has taken just one week, I needed most of the time for the paint job of the little cycles. On last word to the scale: Regarding to the drivers it is approx. 1:72. Regarding to the fact that all those things happened inside a computer you have to look at this a bit different... 1:72 or 1.000.000.000.000.000:1 respectively (depending on point of view...)Image: Lightcycles, as cast Image: Cleaned up Image: Cycle, right/rear view Image: Front/left view Image: Right side Image: Diorama base Image: Diorama, rear view Image: Front view Image: Left side Image: Right side |
