UFO Saucer |

I've always regarded Derek Meddings design of the Saucer from UFO as ingenious.A special effects tour-de-force. Although not as large as the studio models, and not to the same exacting finish, my model attempts to recreate the original as accurately as posible.I would say more accurately than any commercially available. This particular representation from the series comes from the episode "Computer Affair" and features the crash- landed saucer as it glows alternatively orange and chrome. The model itself is made from tracing paper, chrome solartrim, mirror card, white and clear plasticard and highly reflective craft material. The lower and upper clear canopies were thermoformed over plaster of paris moulds using only heat and pressure (no vacuforming). The centre section was formed using a truncated cone development made out of tracing paper and chrome solartrim. The 15 paddles were mirror card covered with chrome solartrim edges. The cap supporting the upper canopy was a sand papered balsa wood plug. The supporting plate (not visible) was layered white plasticard shaped with metal files. The terrain is only very representative incorporating a green hand towel, garden twigs, lichen and moss. The model UFO measures 3 inches in diameter. Image: Closer look |
