Martian War Machines

By Jim Hudson

Here are my two Martian War Machines, which I built several years ago to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the H. G. Wells classic novel (you know the one!)

I mainly used the command bridge sections from two Ertl Klingon Cruisers (the movie version). First thing was to invert them, which gave a menacing look and a cockpit window for the martian pilot, which I painted jade green. The tripod legs were made by stringing two types of craft store plastic beads onto bendable heavy copper wire, and plastic buttons stand in for the foot pads. These were glued into three holes drilled into the bottom of each machine body. I cut some bubbles off a soda cup lid for the heat ray dishes, gluing them onto some support arms from the spare parts drawer.

For the snakelike grasping tentacles, some aluminum shavings with straightened out paper clips inside, for support and shaping. Also used spare parts for the nose-mounted heat ray guns (or smoke cannister ejectors). Testors Model Master pewter silver paint overall, with some copper and chrome silver paints to highlight some details, completed the labor of love. And my neighbor was very kind to take all these photos this past week.
