USS Enterprise

By Christopher J Ross

Here’s the Polar Lights 1/350th scale Enterprise refit. This can be purchased for $55 at most online and local hobby store. This kit was released in spring of 2005 after many posts of “are we there yet?” After receiving the kit and opening it the first thing that comes to mind is WOW! This kit is when assembled is over 3 feet long and very accurate to the studio model.

I started the model by assembling and priming it. Assembly was quite easy and most pieces fit together with little clean up. A few areas that need special attention are where the warp pylons come into the secondary hull. Some super glue was used to make the seem as clean as possible and then some automotive glaze to finish cleaning it up. Another area that need some clean up work I found was the rim around the saucer and the warp nacelles.

After assembly of the model it was coated with Tamiya white primer and then was wet sanded. After the model was smooth I painted it with a silver pearlescent color. I then taped up an Aztec pattern using Tamiya masking tape and then sprayed white over the hull. The model was then clear coated and then taped up with the Aztec for dummy’s template set. After many hours and days of taping up the hull a blue/green pearlescent paint was sprayed over the hull, templates where then removed and the green area around the defector dish was taped up sprayed and then templates where added to add the aztec pattern to the deflector area. Another clear coat was added and then wet sanded down. I finished up the painting by taping up various areas of the model and spraying the appropriate color. A final coat of clear coat was then sprayed and let to sit before applying the decals.

Decals where applied and a final coat of clear was then sprayed to finish up the model.
