Extus Rifle

By Andy Miller

This is my scratch built Extus Rifle from the Warhammer 40.000 game. It's 1:1 scale and measures 140cm (4ft) in length The Extus Rifle is used by the Vindicare Assassin for surgical strikes against heretics.

The rifle is made from 6mm MDF cut on a laser cutter (I was working at an engravers at the time, very useful) The main body is made up of 8 sheets sandwiched together. The inner sheets have larger recesses for the operating breach and cocking handle. The rifle is made up of 6 assemblies, The main body including the butt stock with a recess for the pistol grip, the pistol grip with working trigger, the telescopic sight made from MDF and reticulation parts, the fore stock a long box made from MDF, the hand grip made from 3mm MDF sandwiched with different profiles to give a ribbed appearance and the muzzle from PVC and hose fittings. All the sandwiched MDF was glued together and aligned by inserting dowels in laser cut holes. Surface detail were laser cut from 3mm MDF and glued in place to hide the aligning dowels. The ID plate was also engraved with the laser. A 3mm MDF magazine was constructed the same way and a stealth missile from an aircraft kit added as a round of assassins ammo.

The whole rifle was then painted black and roughly dry brushed with metallic aluminium. The butt, fore stock, hand grip, pistol grip and telescopic sight were painted semi gloss black and then dry brushed with the appropriate contrasting colour. Only thing wrong is that I forgot to seal the MDF before I painted it. The MDF expands a bit when painted so some areas of the rifle have a sort of rough look to them.
