Super Star Destroyer

by Wayne Davis

Scale: Not stated (18" long)

I always liked the Super Stardeystroyer and was disappointed no one made a kit so I took matters into my own hands. Up to this point, I only scratch built a few rockets. Easy enough being mostly tubes. I never done anything quite like this before. I basically used the micro machine SSD as a referencethroughout the entire process along with a few pics of the actual model.

I drew out the basic hull lines, top and bottom, and cut them out of styrene. I added a spacer to the two halfs and glued them. I added more sheet styrene to make the recessed areas. I began to build up the “city” using styrene strips of various sizes. The back area was shaped from dense foam.

For the finer detail, I used any and everything I could find that was small enough. I went to a local shop that does laser cutting and was able to collect small, left over pieces from things they cut. It benefited me because I could use the parts. It benefited them because they got someone to clean out the bottom of thier laser cutter. The command bridge was cut from a micro machine Star destroyer. I molded the Star destroyer with the intentions of making a small fleet around the SSD. I decided to just go with one for size comparison. I did repaint the SD so it would be a little more correct from the medium grey that it was.

I molded the engines from the Republic Assault Ship toy to make the engines for the SSD. It had good detail and was the right size. I painted the inside of the engines white then added transparent orange and red paint.

The base was made from acrylic. I went for a basic shape similar to the ship. The supports are topped with soft rubber so the model will not move around. I didn't want to drill any holes in my model so this was the best option.

For color, I painted the hull a medium grey and the city and underside a dark grey. The engines were painted with a mixture of steel and black.

In all, I am pleased with the outcome. There are a couple if discrepancies such as the scale may be a little off and I thought the it should have flared out a little more about were the bridge is, but I like what I created. So much so, I have begun a Mon Calamari M80 cruiser and the star freighter that Anakin and Padme used to travel to Naboo in Episode II.
